This motion project involved creating stage visuals for a live performance of a song.
I chose the song “Handsome Devil” by The Smiths because I thought it would be interesting to reinterpret it with a new visual language. The strong provocative nature made it a strong foundation for experimentation.
I wanted to use the feel of ephemera to convey an obsessive nature of collecting and self-curation. The visuals draw on the language of zines, personal archives, and found materials.
Getting convincing photography was challenging, and I was unsure what direction to go with, but I decided using photos of myself was an interesting angle on the song.
I set the photography up with my dorm room shower curtain and took over 150 pictures to sell the idea.
I also studied Russian Constructivism and other historical art movements to influence my compositions.
