Redesigning an album cover for Sister Rosetta Tharpe was
Researching her as an artist led me to really interesting inspiration, although her music and artistic identity has very much been portrayed as purely gospel and religious. She has recently been cited as pioneering rock and roll, with musicians such as Jimi Hendrix and Chuck Berry having credited her as a major inspiration.
Although married to men, she was also likely living as bisexual or lesbian, which I felt contradicted the religious and secular image that her estate has used for her modern albums.
I wanted to lean into the rock side of the identity, which hasn’t really been used before by her, to reflect the side of her work which was hidden from the public in her time.
The typography was really important to me on this project as I wanted it to feel contemporary yet reflect the themes of religion in her music.
